Lately Inspired…

I was nerding out at the children’s section a few weekends ago and was completely enamored by Meet Me at the Moon by Gianna Marino. Something about her style has a nice depth… Or maybe I just love elephants. The story was super simple but pretty.

Another book I found beautiful is Red Knit Cap Girl by Naoko Stoop. The story was super simple, but it works, especially when you view it in light of Earth Hour. It looks like she paints on wood blocks… I wish I could find something about her process. I kinda want to try it!  I like how she works with brown paper bags, which I thought was creative re-use.

Yet another book that I liked was Squid and Octopus: Friends for Always by Tao Nyeu. It has good use of pattern, out-loud-chuckle humor, and compelling story. I found this interview with Tao Nyeu interesting. The only thing I didnt really like about the design was how there is too much “white” where having less of it would have been nice.

Finally, My Dad is Big and Strong But… (Coralie Saudo/Kris di Giacomo) reminded me of Ben’s idea for the boy who’s glued to the book. It’s a nice flip flop of roles for dad and son. The use of type (or non-type) is creative. I particularly like Kris di Giacomo‘s use of mixed media. I think she’s awesome.

  1. Great review of books Angela! I also checked out Red Knit Cap girl and really liked the style. The story sort of reminded me of Sungyeon’s Red Tree 🙂

  2. Wow, these are great reviews Angela. I think I am going to get the Dad is Strong but book. All of the books you mention look really intriguing. They make me want to nerd out in the kids book section sometime soon.
